Surgical Education Research Fellowship

Through participation in the University of Utah Surgical Education Research Fellowship, fellows will:  

• Gain the knowledge and skills to lead rigorous surgical education research, investigating and answering important questions that advance the science of surgical education.  Fellows will have direct experience with: 

  • IRB preparation and submission 

  • Grant writing 

  • Research study design 

  • Abstract preparation 

  • Oral and poster presentation skills 

  • Manuscript preparation and submission 

  • Serve as a reviewer for surgical education journals, such as Annals of Surgery Open – Education, and Global Surgical Education 

• Advance their knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding the core elements of surgical education including: 

  • Curriculum Development 

  • Instructional Methods 

  • Learner Assessment 

  • Program Evaluation 

  • Educational research (qualitative and quantitative) 

  • Program Administration (residency, clerkship, simulation, etc.) 

  • Faculty development 

  • Interprofessional education 

• Expand their local, regional, and national network of medical educators through participation in: 

  • University of Illinois-Chicago MHPE 

  • ASE/APDS Surgical Education Week and ASE Committees 

  • Collaborative workshops and meetings with University of Michigan CSTAR 

  • ACS/AEI consortium meetings and postgraduate courses 

• Have opportunities to enhance their clinical teaching skills 

  • General Surgery Intern Orientation 

  • MS3 Clerkship Orientation 

  • MS4 Transition to Internship Course (skills sessions) 

  • Surgery Interest Group events 

  • Surgical Exploration and Discovery (SEAD) program
