GLOBAL PATHWAY

Level I (Undergraduate Students)

    A Level I Global Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Undergraduate students seriously interested in concentrating on more than one training pathway category (i.e., advocacy, education and training, innovation and technology, or research) or in receiving a generalized education in global surgery are encouraged to apply for this level.

    • Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Novice course
    • Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
    • Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)
    • Complete a small internal project related to global surgery
      • Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
    • Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

    Possible sources of funding (by source and type) for this position include: 

    University of Utah Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR)

    • Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)
      • UROP provides a $1,200 stipend and educational programming for students who assist with a faculty member's research or creative project or who carry out a project of their own under the supervision of a faculty member. 
    • Travel and Small Grants
      • Level I Research Scholars may also apply for a travel or small grant from the OUR.

    NOTE: This source of funding is only available to current University of Utah undergraduate students.

    Level II (Medical/Graduate Students)

      A Level II Global Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Medical and graduate students seriously interested in concentrating on more than one training pathway category (i.e., advocacy, clinical work, education and training, innovation and technology, or research) or in receiving a generalized education in global surgery are encouraged to apply for this level. 

      • Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Advanced course
      • Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
      • Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)
      • Implement a project related to global surgery
        • Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
        • ​​​​​​​Submit an abstract to local or regional meeting
        • Encouraged to publish results
      • Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

      Possible sources of funding (by source and type) for this position include: 

      University of Utah Center for Global Surgery

      • (If available) international travel and lodging
      • Presentation at a local or regional conference

      Level III (Surgical Residents)

        A Level III Global Scholar is the designation used for participants of our American College of Surgeons (ACS) Academic Global Surgery Fellowship program. Jointly sponsored by the ACS, University of Utah (UU) School of Medicine, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health System Authority, and Hawassa University (HU) College of Medicine and Health Sciences, this fellowship was created to address surgical disparities in underserved populations. Priority areas of work include surgical systems, trauma systems development, and surgical skills capacity building. 

        ELIGIBILITY

        • Completion of at least three clinical years in, and currently in good standing with, an ACGME-accredited surgical residency program
        • Availability of one full year for dedicated, continuous research time
        • Ability to live in Ethiopia for 3-6 months
        • ACS (resident) membership

        NOTE: Priority is given to residents from UU and VCU

        • Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Advanced course
        • Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
        • Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)
        • Spend 3-6 months at HU in Hawassa, Ethiopia
        • Supervise and mentor Level I and Level II Global Scholars 
        • Contribute to teaching programs based on local (Ethiopian) needs - fellows will be expected to be engaged participants in peer-to-peer level education, giving lectures, workshops, and courses as requested
        • Engage in research and quality improvement work - fellows will work on specific projects determined by the fellow and their mentor(s), with clear mentors and outputs; they will work on projects that lead to implementing measurable changes and help create and maintain crucial datasets
        • Participate in clinical activities at HU throughout the continuum of care - fellows will participate as members of the team alongside site-based faculty, residents, and allied health professionals as long as there is no negative impact on the education of local trainees, and as permitted by and consistent with local laws, including local licensure and similar requirements
        • Program monitoring and evaluation - fellows will contribute to assessing the success of the planned research at HU so that planned collaborative activities are occurring in the anticipated timeline and able to produce the expected outputs; they will contribute to the strategic planning for future research initiatives, as possible
        • Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
        • Submit abstracts to the ACS Quality and Safety Conference (held annually in July), the  College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) Annual Meeting (held annually in December), and the ACS Annual Meeting (held annually in October) 
        • Encouraged to publish results
        • Complete a final end-of-year report of experience, including documentation/log of all activities performed to be submitted to the collaborative

        Funding is provided by the partnership described in the position overview (as well as the scholar's home institution if the scholar isn't currently employed by UU or VCU) and generally covers:

        • Salary
        • Travel costs to and from HU, the ACS Quality and Safety Conference, the COSECSA Annual Meeting, and the ACS Annual Meeting
        • Any other applicable fees associated with the fellowship

        NOTE: Funding will be decided on a case-by-case basis, with the scholar's home institution expected to cover up to 50% of the salary and 100% of benefits. 

        Selection of candidates will alternate between UU and VCU candidate pools. The call for applications will be coordinated through the institutional representative of the priority institution per cycle.

        Visiting Scholar Program

        Level IV (Physicians/Surgeons)

          A Level IV Global Scholar is the designation used for participants of our Visiting Scholar Program (VSP), meant for those wanting to receive a generalized education in global surgery or complete a specific rotation with our Center over a period of less than one year, usually foreign surgical trainees or surgeons. This scholarship serves as both an opportunity for the Center for Global Surgery to further its mission and to help develop a visiting scholar's expertise and skills, something to share with colleagues in their home country upon their return. As such, the Center for Global Surgery has a unique role in not only shaping a visiting scholar's career and personal experience, but also in having a positive impact beyond our borders. 

          If you are interested in completing a visiting scholarship, or you are a Center for Global Surgery affiliated faculty member that is wanting to invite a visiting scholar to the University of Utah, please follow the steps below: 

          NOTE: The application process must be completed 8 weeks prior to the desired start date.

          3. The program team will respond to your request within 5-10 business days and let you know if your application has been approved or if further information is needed. Once approved, complete and submit the following materials:
          4. If visiting for longer than one day, you will be required to complete a background check and drug screen. Review the information sent to you by Human Resources for specific instructions and complete the screening process. 
          5. If visiting for longer than one day, upon arrival at the University of Utah, visit the UCard Services Office in the Hospital Acute Care Center (ACC) on level LL2, Room B016 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, to pick up your badge. 
          6. At the conclusion of your visit, please make sure to:
            • Return your badge (if applicable)
            • Complete and submit the Visiting Scholar Evaluation Form
            • Complete and submit a 500-word article detailing your experience (to be posted on the Center for Global Surgery website)
