Surgery Research

The Department of Surgery seeks to advance scientific and medical discovery related to the cure of surgical disease by focusing on:

1. Recruitment of and investment in bright, motivated research faculty
2. Maintaining a strong administrative support infrastructure
3. Creating forums and programs to support rigorous inquiry in a collaborative multi-disciplinary environment.  The department measures success in the growth of a sustainable, externally-funded research portfolio productive of impactful discovery.

In order to recruit and support successful research faculty, we have created an individually-focused support infrastructure consisting of four established research sections, including Health Services Research, Clinical Trials, Basic Science, and Innovation. These reflect our commitment to supporting the interests of of our faculty across the full spectrum of research, from basic and translational science to clinical outcomes and health policy.  Clinician investigators and research faculty with a commitment to developing a sustainable externally-funded research portfolio are “on-boarded” into a research section, through which an individually-tailored support program is developed, including financial support, mentorship, and connection to intramural and extramural research collaborators.
