Research Pathway

RESEARCH TRAINING PATHWAY

Level I (Undergraduate Students)

    A Level I Research Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Undergraduate students interested in global surgery research are encouraged to apply for this level.

    • Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Novice course
    • Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
    • Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)
    • Complete a small internal research project
      • Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
    • Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

    Possible sources of funding (by source and type) for this position include: 

    University of Utah Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR)

    • Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)
      • UROP provides a $1,200 stipend and educational programming for students who assist with a faculty member's research or creative project or who carry out a project of their own under the supervision of a faculty member. 
    • Travel and Small Grants
      • Level I Research Scholars may also apply for a travel or small grant from the OUR.

    NOTE: This source of funding is only available to current University of Utah undergraduate students. 

    Level II (Medical/Graduate Students)

      A Level II Research Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Medical and graduate students interested in global surgery research are encouraged to apply for this level. Prior experience in global health and international service, public health, epidemiology, and/or biostatistics is desired, as well as familiarity with data analysis software such as Excel, STATA, SAS, or similar software. Additional qualifications include experience working both independently and collaboratively, strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to research and troubleshoot project-related issues. 

      • Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Advanced course
      • Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
      • Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)
      • Complete 1-2 e-learning courses on research methodology, statistics, grant or manuscript writing, etc. 
      • Implement a research project in one to two of five main academic areas (data science/geography, quantitative/qualitative analysis, quality improvement, implementation research, and innovation)
        • Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
        • Submit abstract to local or regional meeting
        • Encouraged to publish results
      • Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

      Possible sources of funding (by source and type) for this position include: 

      University of Utah Center for Global Surgery

      • (If available) international travel and lodging
      • Presentation at a local or regional conference

      NOTE: This source of funding is not guaranteed/routinely available for those outside of the University of Utah. 

      Level III (Physicians/Surgeons)

        A Level III Research Scholar will be appointed for a period of one year (beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following academic year) within the Center for Global Surgery's Training Pathways Program. Surgical residents, fellows, practicing surgeons, and experienced researchers interested in global surgery research are encouraged to apply for this level. Prior experience in global health and international service, public health, epidemiology, and/or biostatistics is desired, as well as familiarity with data analysis software such as Excel, STATA, SAS, or similar software. Additional qualifications include experience working both independently and collaboratively, strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to research and troubleshoot project-related issues. 

        • Complete the University of Utah Introduction to Academic Global Surgery Advanced course
        • Attend weekly Works-in-Progress meetings
        • Encouraged to attend related local activities (e.g., virtual conferences, panel discussions)
        • Complete 1-2 e-learning courses on research methodology, statistics, grant or manuscript writing, etc. 
        • Work with undergraduate, graduate, and medical students; surgical residents and fellows; and faculty mentors across a range of subspecialties to conduct global surgery research
        • Spend 2-4 weeks at a surgical site in an LMIC
        • Supervise and mentor Level I and II Research Scholars
        • Implement a research project in one to two of five main academic areas (data science/geography, quantitative/qualitative analysis, quality improvement, implementation research, and innovation)
          • Present at two (2) Works-in-Progress meetings
          • Submit abstract to national meeting (e.g., American College of Surgeons)
          • Encouraged to publish results
        • Write a 500-word blog post detailing experience for the CGS website

        • (If available) international travel and lodging
        • Presentation at a national conference

        3. Current Curriculum Vitae (tailored toward global surgery activities)
        4. If applying for the Level III track, copies of MD/DO and any other relevant graduate-level diplomas/licensure
        5. If applying for the Level III track, two letters of reference, including letter of good standing in current residency program from Program Director or Chair (if applicable)
