PGY-4 Urology Resident (Resident 2009 - 2014)

My reasons for choosing the University of Utah are complex and broad; however, it came down to obtaining a first-class residency education and experience, as well as being able to enjoy and love the environment I trained in.

When I started to look at residency programs four years ago, I sought a program that would give me a wonderful and broad educational experience. I also looked for programs with a good track record at placing people into both academic fellowships and private practice, as I felt this would reflect how truly well rounded the program was. The U medical school has fit that bill nicely. The urology residency program is a program that has continued to expand and innovate, adding new physicians and ancillary staff members to constantly strengthen patient care and resident educational experiences. The physicians and other members of the department have continued to impress me with their concern for my educational experience and their expansion of clinical and research opportunities for residents. My particular research and clinical interests have been encouraged, and I consider my attendings as mentors who have encouraged my career at every turn. The intermountain region also allows for a broad-based patient experience, drawing interesting and challenging cases from across Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and portions of other surrounding states.

Beyond the educational opportunities, I have enjoyed the remarkable landscape Utah is blessed with. The sheer proximity of the mountains, a mere 30 minutes away, provide a beautiful natural playground with world class skiing, hiking, camping and biking opportunities. It is not every day that you can be less than 30 minutes from a major international airport or the mountains. I am grateful to train in a program concerned about my growth as a physician. I am glad that I have had the opportunity to train here, and I would encourage others to strongly consider the University of Utah.
