Welcome to the Division of General Surgery web site. Available here is a brief description of our faculty, links to our clinical activities/programs as well as our education and research programs.

The Division of General Surgery offers a continuum of care for patients with a wide variety of general surgical problems. As a result of our clinical expertise and research programs patients receive a highly specialized assessment, the newest treatment modalities including clinical trials for new medications and emerging surgical techniques and coordinated follow-up of their care.

The Division of General Surgery supports the mission and vision of the University of Utah Health by seeking to improve the health and quality of life of our patients and community through excellence in surgical education, surgical research, and surgical care.

Division Chief Announce Faculty Ascender Grant Seed Award Program.

Dr. Nirula has recently announced a faculty ascender grant program for any general surgery division faculty who submits a meritorious proposal. Three awards, which will be funded from his Endowed Chair Fund, will be given and can be used to support research, technical innovation, education program development or administrative development.

Award Details:

  • Three awards are available in the amount of $25,000 each
  • Funds are to be used for direct costs related to the program development and not for Division APC, resident or faculty salary support.
  • Deadline is January 10th, 2023.
  • Awards that demonstrate innovative approaches to solve problems will be favored but can focus on any of the academic/clinical pillars
  • See application for format – limit 3 pages, 11 point Arial font with 1 inch margins.
