Celebrating the Perfusion Lab & Honoring Don Kimble

Congratulations to Dr. Richard Gurgel (Associate Professor, Otolaryngology) for induction as a Fellow of the University of Utah Academy of Health Science Educators!

Dr. Gurgel is passionate about medical education and has received numerous teaching awards including Resident Teacher of the Year award from the University of Iowa Department of Otolaryngology, The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Fellow Teacher of the Year for the two consecutive years of his fellowship at Stanford University, and the Leland Johnson Faculty Teaching Award at the University of Utah. He has published educational research on mentoring, the impact of duty hours on surgical training, and gender disparities in operative case volume among US Otolaryngology residents.  He is also a teacher in the home as the father of five precocious daughters!

The Academy of Health Science Educators is a service program for exceptional educators. Fellows are recognized as outstanding educators in their field and advocate for excellent education in their departments, colleges, and the larger University of Utah Health. Fellows will join an Academy committee and be an active participant in the Academy’s development and activities.
