GLOBAL SURGERY TRAINING PATHWAYS

Overview

The Center for Global Surgery offers a number of Scholar Training Pathways, beginning on July 1st of each academic year, for those interested in global surgery. Click on the pathway that interests you to learn more about it and the different tracks we offer!

    The Advocacy Scholar Training Pathway is a dynamic program designed to equip individuals with the knowledge, skills, and strategies needed to become effective advocates for global surgery equity. Through a combination of interactive learning, practical experiences, and mentorship, participants will develop the expertise to drive transformative change in global surgical systems and policies.

    Those interested in global surgery advocacy, to include campaign mobilizing, media engagement, op-ed writing, etc., are encouraged to apply to our Advocacy Scholar Training Pathway. 

    The Clinical Scholar Training Pathway is an immersive program designed to empower healthcare professionals with the specialized skills, knowledge, and cultural competencies required to deliver high-quality surgical care in resource-limited settings. Through a combination of rigorous training, hands-on experiences, and mentorship, participants will develop the clinical proficiency and adaptability necessary to excel in diverse and challenging surgical environments. 

    Those interested in hands-on clinical work in global surgery are encouraged to apply to our Clinical Scholar Training Pathway.

    The Education and Training Scholar Training Pathway is a comprehensive program designed to equip healthcare professionals and educators with the skills, knowledge, and tools to effectively train and mentor the next generation of global surgeons and healthcare providers. Through a combination of innovative pedagogical approaches, practical experiences, and mentorship, participants will develop the expertise to create impactful educational programs, enhance surgical skills training, and foster sustainable capacity building.

    Those interested in global surgery education and/or training, to include curriculum development, evaluation and assessment, program management, etc., are encouraged to apply to our Education and Training Scholar Training Pathway.

    The Innovation and Technology Scholar Training Pathway is a forward-thinking program designed to empower healthcare professionals, engineers, researchers, and innovators with the knowledge and skills to leverage innovative technologies and solutions to address challenges in global surgical care. Through a combination of hands-on experiences, interdisciplinary collaboration, and mentorship, participants will develop the expertise to create and implement transformative solutions that enhance surgical access, safety, and outcomes in resource-limited settings.

    Those interested in global surgery innovation and technology (especially those with a background in engineering) are encouraged to apply to our Innovation and Technology Scholar Training Pathway.

    The Research Scholar Training Pathway is a comprehensive program designed to equip healthcare professionals, researchers, and scholars with the skills and expertise to conduct impactful research in the field of Global Surgery. Through a combination of rigorous training, hands-on research experiences, and mentorship, participants will develop the capacity to design, conduct, and disseminate research that addresses critical challenges in global surgical equity. 

    Those interested in advancing knowledge, generating evidence, and driving evidence-based practices to improve surgical care in resource-limited settings are encouraged to apply to our Research Scholar Training Pathway.

    The Global Scholar Training Pathway is a comprehensive and inclusive program designed to cultivate versatile leaders with a holistic understanding of global surgical challenges and solutions. Through a combination of a balanced curriculum encompassing essential domains, hands-on experiences, and mentorship, participants will develop a well-rounded skill set to lead and contribute effectively towards achieving surgical equity on a global scale.

    Those interested in concentrating on more than one scholar training pathway category (i.e., advocacy, clinical work, education and training, innovation and technology, or research) or in receiving a generalized education in global surgery and encouraged to apply to our Global Scholar Training Pathway. 

    NOTE: This pathway includes a designated track for our American College of Surgeons (ACS) Academic Global Surgery Fellowship program as well as our Visiting Scholar Program (VSP). 

    How to Apply

    Submit the following materials to the Programs Manager, Ms. Darelli-Anderson, at anna.darelli-anderson@utah.edu

    1. Cover Letter
    2. Personal Statement addressing commitment to global surgery, why you selected the pathway you did, and how you will benefit from the program (500 words)
    3. Current Curriculum Vitae (tailored toward global surgery activities)
    4. If applying for a Level III track, copies of MD/DO and any other relevant graduate-level diplomas/licensure
    5. If applying for a Level III track (or the Level II Clinical track), two letters of reference, including letter of good standing in current residency program from Program Director or Chair (if applicable)

    NOTE: Separate application processes must be followed for those applying to either the Level III (ACS Academic Global Surgery Fellowship) or Level IV ("Visiting Scholar") Global pathway tracks. See our Global Pathway page for more details.
