Welcome Our New Provider, Dr. Sara Pereira

We would like to announce a leadership transition in our Division of Otolaryngology/Head-Neck Surgery. Dr. Clough Shelton is stepping down as Division Chief in anticipation of retiring from clinical practice this Spring. Dr. Shelton has served as Chief of the Division of Otolaryngology/Head-Neck Surgery since 2004 and has over 30 years experience in academic practice.
 
Dr. Shelton has had an exemplary career as an academic surgeon. He is recognized nationally and internationally in the area of neurotology, cochlear implantation, and skull base surgery. His colleagues pay tribute to Dr. Shelton’s contributions as having advanced the field like very few before him.  In recognition of his immense contributions to his field, he has served as President of the American Neurotology Society, President of the American Otological Society and President of the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. More importantly, his skill and expertise has benefited thousands of patients during his practice here at the University of Utah.
 
Dr. Shelton’s superb leadership and contributions to the Department and Institution are immense. Under his leadership, the division has risen in national prominence to be recognized as one of the outstanding clinical, research, and educational programs in the country. Dr. Shelton has recruited the very best faculty in his efforts to build a truly outstanding division. In turn, the division has been successful in recruiting from the top applicants for their training programs. His colleagues comment that Dr. Shelton’s has served as a gifted educator, mentor and partner to all those he has served.
 
On behalf of the Department, we want to thank you Dr. Shelton for your years of service on behalf of your patients, our staff, our learners, our colleagues and our institution.
 
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Jason Hunt, Professor of Surgery, has been named as Interim Division Chief. Dr. Hunt joined the University of Utah faculty in 2006. His clinical and academic areas of expertise are in Head and Neck Oncology and microvascular reconstruction.  Dr. Hunt directs the Head and Neck Oncology group and is the Leader of the Head and Neck Disease Center at Huntsman Cancer Institute. He also serves as the Medical Director for the Operating Rooms at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital. In these roles, Dr. Hunt has proven himself to be an outstanding leader. Dr. Hunt will be an excellent contributor to the Department leadership in our mission to maintain the highest levels of professionalism and quality in patient care, to promote a culture of respect and inclusion, and enhance our multidisciplinary collaborative academic environment. We thank Dr. Hunt for agreeing to serve, and thanks to all of those in our Department community for supporting Dr. Hunt in his new role. We are looking forward to working with him in this leadership capacity within the Division of Otolaryngology/Head-Neck Surgery and the Department.
